Reading Lessons in Chicago's North Suburbs
Instruction that Matters Most, From Speech-Language Pathologists
When your child begins reading lessons at Ravinia Reading Center, we don't waste a lot of time getting to the task at hand: teaching your child to read. We tailor instruction to simultaneously build phonemic awareness and phonics skills as your child takes the first meaningful steps towards reading fluency.

How Frequently Should My Child Take Lessons?
Following one or two initial reading lessons, we ask that you enroll your child at Ravinia Reading Center. Enrollment is two regularly scheduled reading lessons per week. This frequency of instruction gives us just enough repetition to make meaningful progress. Our north Chicago clinic offers convenient after-school hours and reading lessons 7 days a week.
Some struggling readers benefit from more than two lessons a week. After we spend some time with a new student, we will let you know if a more frequent schedule is necessary. Parents are encouraged to sit-in on reading lessons, because there is so much to be learned from watching what happens in a session.
Is There Additional Reading Homework?
Dr. Holly Shapiro has created a series of fun and worthwhile practice pages that we highly-recommend doing. They're quick, and compliment our reading lessons very well by setting skills into stone and helping your child to over learn words so they can become second nature.
Three to five minutes a night boosts progress and makes a lot of difference, helping your to child permanently commit newly developed reading skills.
